This duel puts a well-known brewer, Great Lakes, up against a another powerhouse in Surly. For Great Lakes, we’ve got the Dortmunder Gold Lager, while Surly offers it’s Hell Lager. I wasn’t aware of the location of either of these brewers, but after a little research I found Great Lakes is based in Cleveland and Surly in Minneapolis. So we’ve got a couple of midwest brands on tap today.
I’ve never had either of these particular brews before, so I’m not sure what to expect from this one. No sense in beating around the bush, let’s get started.

Tell us about it
This one was close, Surly Hell Lager won packaging and aroma, but in the categories that count most, Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold Lager’s blend of malt and hops was more appealing to my palate. It’s a very smooth lager, an unassumingly strong offering in this category. I’d recommend each of these, you really can’t go wrong here.
